2020 Vision | The Subject

Something has shifted for me this year.

All this time, I have been thinking, what is my photographic Identity?

Weddings, Events, Portraits, Street, Architecture, Moments, Animals?

I have created all of these images - yes Weddings too.

That wasn’t my identity…..no.

I had a moment when studying the online course with Masters of Photography with Joel Meyerowitz. Joel said, “you may find on some particular day nothing inspiring to shoot, pay attention to the Light…the Light will become your subject.

This was a breakthrough moment for me because when I left the house, I started paying attention to where the Sun ☀️ was.

Left,

Right,

In Front or Behind me.

Front Lit, Back Lit, Side Lit.

Everything changed because I finally could see the Light in all its glory.

The Light has become my Subject.

Anything caught in its path will be illuminated.

This has huge implications now for all of the context that I find myself in when creating images.

How does the light fall on a face?

What is the quality of light

Soft or Hard.

How does the light behave after rain?

Without Light, my camera will be as blind as me.

We would all be fumbling in the dark.

“There is a crack in everything.
That's how the light gets in”.
Leonard Cohen,
