Seeing in Layers

Seeing and shooting with Layers in mind is a fascinating concept. Layers is about using the classic frame of 35mm to its full story board potential.

If you look closely at the image above, the context is a busy high street which is layered with:

  • A Woman on Crutches
  • Two Travellers with Luggage
  • A Jogger

Three expressions of life all busy against a typical busy afternoon.

This is a simple example I observed and reacted to very quickly.

The image above is another simpler example; the Frame revealed flowers in the foreground, the motorist next and then the Caffe in the background. The narrative reveals a residential environment with a human element.

Let’s try a few more; look and see what you notice.

These images were all created using the 35mm Lens. It is a moderately wide Lens. The reason I love this field of view is because it matches the full frame sensor or to put it another way, it fits the original size of film. This is why I call it The Classic Frame.

On my Fuji XT1, the XF23mm F2 gives me the exact same field of view as a 35mm on a Full Frame Sensor.

I am practicing my vision to see layers and deeper narratives in my 35mm Frame. I think this is a great storytelling practice.

Thanks for reading.
