Taking The Long View

The debate between a Primed Fixed Focal Length will rage on forever. I can understand why because Primes are simply fantastic, the image quality is impeccable and frankly this is the point.

The end goal is the final image.

I find it really interesting to read reviews of a Lens which factor in size and weight of Telephoto Zooms - this has become such a massive distinction now in choosing a specific Lens.

Size and Weight is the impact of engineering and physics in designing a fast optics like the big ass XF50mm F1.0

It goes with the territory; Fast Lens equals Big Heavy Lens.

Today, I took my XF90mm F2 for a spin.

This is a Prime Telephoto Lens.

Each time I use it, I remember why I love this Lens.

The XF90mm F2 is a fantastic Lens for Portraits; it’s a perfect 135mm 1.5 crop factor on the Fuji System.

For everything else, it is a wonderful tool for candid photography and detail extraction. All this while keeping my distance.

While using this Lens, my vision switch’s to seeing Long, further aged off into the distance - at least 20 metres away. Compared to the XF18mm or 23mm, where I see Wide & Deep, here, I am looking for detail extraction or a candid moment unfolding.

The Long View is just as valid as getting close with a 35mm Lens. The famous Photographer Saul Leiter used a long Lens for a lot of his work with really stunning results.

Street Photography is a weak label to describe how I work. I am a Photojournalist who documents life and all of its expressive manifestations. This includes Humanism, Expression, Moments, Light, Colour & Gesture. I also enjoy using a wide variety of Lens to do my work.

I have come to appreciate the visual language of a Wide / Getting Closer Vision Vs The Candid Long View Vision of a Telephoto Vs The Normal Vision of a 35mm/50mm Frame.

My Photography has embraced all of it and I know what Lens to use for any given subject that interest me.

Working with Prime Lens has taught me how to really use my Zoom Lens.
