Visual Database

Visual Database.

What does this mean?

My friend and coach Bryan Peterson encouraged me practice using all of my Lens; this is focal range from 10mm right up to 300mm. This covers my Nikon & Fuji Equipment.

This study has taught me how all of my Lens see the world:

  • The width and depth of a Wide Angle Lens.
  • The optical magic of compression using a Telephoto Lens.
  • The “normal” vision of a 40/50mm Lens.

These three options have given me a database of focal lengths to draw on for my creative expression.

I know exactly what my Lens can do, how they behave and how they will render a scene.

My Sensor is the Canvas and my Lens is a specific Brush to paint with Light.

I am now of the belief that every subject has its own specific focal length. I would love to photograph a Lion with a 35mm or even my 50mm - common sense and safety dictates a 200-500mm Lens. However, when I visit South Africa this year, I don’t want my wildlife images looking like they could have been created in a zoo. I am thinking a good zoom Lens on my D500 - the 28-300mm F3.4-5.6. This Lens is fantastic because is gives me a field of view of 42mm up to 450mm due to the crop of 1.5. This is perfect for my trip.

All other subject matters like Travel Documentary can be dealt with using my 24-120mm F4 plus one fast Prime of 16mm 1.4 for low light.

So this week has been fantastic using my Wide Angle Lens. Seeing the wider frame and crafting the content within such an expansive view.

Today has been great using my 14mm f2.8

That concludes my study for this week.

My next project will be called seeing like Saul
