2020 Vision | 18 Going on 16

How wide is wide?

14mm, 16mm or 18mm.

That is a lot to choose from not to mention the terrific 10-24mm F4.

As an XPro2 Shooter, I was enamoured with the 16mm 1.4.

I felt I didn’t need it because of already owning the stellar 16-55mm. It’s tricky thing to balance on the XPro2. I can handle it but the issues is, I am aware that I am handling it. I like my tools to blend in with me.

I decided to invest in the 16mm f2.8.

It is small, it’s light profile sits well on the Xpro2 and I am no longer conscious of it. I can focus on the world around me.

In this version, the Aperture goes all the way to F22, the 16mm F1.4 only goes as far as F16mm. This is a BIG deal to me because F22 is the sweet spot for maximum depth of field.

F22 with my Manual Focus pre-set to 1 meter with decent foreground interest gives me an epic encounter.

This Lens completes my XPro2 Kit:

16mmF2.8…………..Landscape - Full Length Portraits

18mm F2.8………….Streetscape - Environmental Portraits

27mm F2.8………….Streetphotography - Portraits

35mm F2…………….Tight Streetwork

50mm F2…………….Medium Telephoto/Streetwork

90mm F2……………..Epic Portraits - Head and Shoulders.

I would choose probably three of these Lens for a day out walking.

Today, I created a few moments to test the 16mm F2.8. I can say with zero reservation, I love it.

For me, there isn’t much difference between 16mm and 18mm.

2mm difference.

The 18mm gives me at 27mm Field of View, the 16mm comes in at 24mm on a Full Frame so the difference in Full Frame terms is enough to warrant having this in my bag. I know exactly when 24mm will be required

18mm is my go to Street Photojournalistic vision.

LIFE AT 18mm

Learning the vocabulary of all of my Lens has been part of my photographic maturity.

Knowing how to use each Lens is the magic.
