2020 Vision | Candid or Asking

Candid moments can be a truly awesome expression of life. Disturbing the scene to ask permission will not work.

I rather capture the moment and apologies after.

Some of my best moments however came out of a conversation and then asking.

I saw this gentleman sat proudly in his obviously classic car.

I thought about a candid shot but I found myself saying, “hello sir, how old is your car”?

“60 years old”, he replied.

“How long have you had it”?

“50 years”.

“That engine is purring beautifully”.

I could tell he was proud of it and welcomed my interest. I told him I love photographing classic cars, “would you mind”?

“Be my guest”.

I created a few images quickly; looking through my view finder I could tell this man was chuffed and proud.

Asking to create an image has as much power and validity as a candid moment. They both require sensitivity and perfect timing.

In the case of a request, timing the moment, showing genuine interest and having no fear in asking is critical to success.

So, the big question is, Candid Imagery or Creative Collaboration?

For me and my self-expression, both work equally fine.

I trust my muse to tell what is appropriate in the moment.
