2020 Vision | Colourless Expression

There was a time when we did not question the absence of Colour. Many of the great timeless expressions of life were captured in Black and White.

Master Image Creators like Henri Cartier Bresson, Brassai and Ansel Adams showed us our world stripped of Colour and yet full of evocative expression.

Seeing my world stripped of Colour is just a reflection of how I feel about life right now.

I still choose to celebrate life, look after my mother, practice magic and create images.

I am just worried about humanity post Pandemic.

I really enjoy creating in Black and White.

I have mentioned before that I see Colour profoundly.

My attraction to Primary Colours is very strong.

So strong in fact, I once did a project where I only shot Primary Colours for a whole week - one Primary Colour per day.

This was an immersion project in seeing Colour, it was brilliant.

No distractions; if I saw anything Red, I created an image, same with all the Colours.

With Black and White, this has become an interesting game for me because I am hardwired for Colour. Seeing the world through my viewfinder stripped of Colour is mind expanding.

Today, I see nothing but shades of Grey, because of one elusive element…THE LIGHT.

My first lesson on this journey is to see the quality and direction of Light; pay attention to the Shadows, the Highlights will follow.

Wow, this is a different quality of seeing.

In the process, the expression of life will still provide me with a story worthy of capture and a narrative that hopefully will give you, the viewer, an opportunity to experience the expression of life regardless of Colour being absent.

Thank you for reading.
