2020 Vision | On The Edge

This reflection on the expression of life is dedicated to those who live their expression right on the edge.

The Photographers I have been inspired by also lived on the edge. They had the courage to put their camera right in the face of life that went against normality.

Robert Frank, Lynsey Adario, Robert Kapa, Don McCullin, Steve McCurry and more recently Charlene Winfred.

These image creators saw a side of life that really rocks the foundation of humanity. War, Famine, Genocide, Human Indignity. Images that really gets under the skin of the human expression of life.

What has this got to do with Skateboarding?

Absolutely nothing.

What it does communicate is my desire to create expressive images.

The Photographers I mentioned above inspired me to go out and look for the people who live on the edge of life and Self Expression.

The Genius and The Madness.

There’s no getting round it, life is a tough gig.

It’s a delicate tight rope we all walk.

We will all have a wobble at some point.

This Lockdown Pandemic has confirmed that we have crossed over the tipping point of humanity, survival, and honesty.

Self Expression is about honesty; Bruce Lee once said, “the hardest thing to do in life is to honestly express yourself, man, that is very hard to do”.

I may never see War or Photograph it my life time.

Right now, humanity is at war.

I hit the streets everyday to document The Pandemic.

This is my daily exercise for my body, mind and heart.

I see the empty streets, the mask on the face, the shifty body language saying don’t get to close.

I sense my neighbours have changed.

I smell fear in the atmosphere.

Fuck it, I am living my life and I am sticking my Camera in the face of this Pandemic and defying it to stop me.

My documentation of this period in my life will be looked back on with pride because my heart is full of hope.

Humanity will win, because it was shown to me when I was sick and couldn’t even get out of bed to look after my mother.

To live on the edge is to feel alive.

On the other side of coin, for those who wobble on the tight rope and fall. It’s up to us to lift up our brothers and sisters.

This is the ultimate expression of life.

As a Landmark Education Graduate, my Coach said me; “everybody wins, no one gets left behind. Be the voice for those who have lost theirs, defend your friends when they are not present to defend themselves, take a stand for something greater than yourself. Leave this world better than you found it”.

Thank you for reading.
