2020 Vision | Visual Vocabulary

My friend and coach Bryan Peterson taught me a valuable lesson; he said, “learn the visual vocabulary of any Lens you use”.

Simply put, this means learn how any given Lens “sees”.

I make a point of doing week long, sometimes a month of shooting with one Prime Lens. I have started a new discipline using The Fuji XF90mm.

This Lens is pure Telephoto.

It sees with the angle of view as a full frame 135mm.

It’s primarily a Portrait Lens.

It does a wonderful job rendering beautiful compression and shallow depth of field.

This Lens has a glorious optical arrangement and fast F2 Aperture. I discovered I need to stand around 3 meters away from my subject to create a pleasing composition.

I don’t always shoot wide open, sometimes up to F4. This works for me.

For Telephoto action, this Lens snaps very quickly onto whatever moment I see in front of me.

I would use this this Lens for Street Photography and Street Portraits - Events, Travel and Wildlife. I am lusting after the XF50-140mm, however, this will do me just fine because it is a perfect tool for isolating moments.

I see in Telephoto and also Wide around 28mm.

My normal everyday Lens is between 40mm and 70mm.

This is how my eyes work.

My brain makes whatever adjustment required to compensate.

Sharpness of this Lens is superb.

I keep my shutter speed around 1/400th sec in good light.

This post was inspired by fellow Fuji Shooter Dan Bailey. Dan shared a great video about why he lovec the XF90mm F2 it’s worth a look.
