The Joy of Seeing

The joy of seeing for me has become more about being taken by a moment.

This simply means a moment has stopped me in my tracks.

What is it about a moment, a scene, an expression that compels me to create an image?

I could easily manufacture a clever answer:

  • The Light
  • The Expression
  • The Gesture
  • The Unusual
  • The Juxstaposition
  • The Colour
  • The Extraordinary

All of this would or could be a factor in my decision making process.

Let’s just say these elements are now a given; they are already in place and tuned into my visual database.

My answer is very simple and yet elusive; I feel it.

That’s right.

I feel the moment.

I am totally empty with zero attachment when out and about with my Camera.

The Moment speaks to me; my Street Portraits all occur because in the moment I am sharing with a Subject, is governed by the quality of rapport and engagement.

My Portraits look the way the way they do because my Subjects give me “the look” I am hoping to capture.

It’s a beautiful thing to experience as a Photographer; capturing the pure essence of another and celebrating our humanity together.

The Joy of Seeing is a wonder to behold.

“Never lose an opportunity of seeing anything beautiful, for beauty is God's handwriting”.

Ralph Waldo Emerson
