35mm CF | 28mm or 35mm

Oh what a dichotomy.

Two of my favourite focal lengths

The 18mm in Full Frame equals 27/28mm - The 23mm equals 35mm.

I was walking home from Paddington Station this afternoon. I had the XF23mm F2 on my Camera and it was perfect to document The Paddington Basin - Grand Union Canal.

The 35mm Field of View is the start of Wide Angle Vision. My Tool Box of Wide Angle Lens covers 10-24mm F4, 14mm, 16mm, 18mm and 23mm.

My Sweet Spot for my eyes is 18mm - my limit is 16mm which I use for Epic Vistas.

As I write this essay, I am comparing the Field of View between 28mm & 35mm. That’s a 7mm difference - not much too make a big deal about. If I have room to navigate the scene, the 35mm does the job perfectly.

There is no doubt in my mind; The 35mm on a Full Frame is a classic beautiful partnership for 90% of subjects.

The images in this Essay really showcase how well this Classic Frame and Lens holds a scene together.

I intend to stick with this set-up a little longer because I want test this combination for Environmental Portraits - People in context is part of my great interest, this will follow in tomorrows episode.

So to answer my question; 28 or 35mm?

Guess what?

I take both them.

Simply because, when working with a three Prime Lens Set-Up, my Combinations are as Follows:

Set-Up One:

18mm, 33mm, 90mm / EQ 28mm, 50mm, 135mm - that covers, Environment, Detail & Portraits

Set-Up Two

16mm, 23mm, 56mm / 24mm, 35mm, 85mm

When I look at this combination for my Fujis, one Lens covers all of my subjects - The XF 16-55mm F2.8. I will do a project on this stunning Optics very soon.

For now, this project in using Single Focal Lengths is a great practice in zooming with my feet and training myself to use my zooms correctly.
