35mm Film

This blog story is rather unusual for me as a Fuji Shooter.

Long before my Fuji make over, I shot an entire week using just my old Canon 35mm Film Camera - what an adventure that was.

This was five years ago, how do I know?

That’s how long the rolls of film have been in the Canon Camera bag, waiting to see the light of day.

Once I got my first Fuji Camera, the X100T, I completely forget about the film rolls full of images I created.

This collection of images were created at a time when I did not really know what I was doing.

Just consider, I had a basic understanding of exposure thanks to Bryan Peterson’s book, “UNDERSTANDING EXPOSURE”.

I remember thinking, let’s test myself and try Bryan’s ideas using my film Camera.

I had the films developed before I left for South Korea two weeks ago, I picked them today.

I took a moment in the local coffee shop to look at the results from FIVE YEARS AGO.

All I can say is, I am astounded by several things.

Firstly, the image quality of the Fuji Film I was using on my Canon Camera plus the Ilford Black and White Rolls. I was also delighted with the simple fact that my Canon Film Camera still works.

It’s is basic, it does the job as it should.

Here is the most significant thing, getting the exposure right; I had no idea until now what was in the rolls, I had completely forgotten many of the moments I created bar one or two of the images.

In reviewing some of the images, I can see where I was not paying attention to my Shutter Speed; the second image above is a little soft. Shooting film is unforgiving and a wonderful learning curve.

My education today has taken a wonderful turn and breakthrough; fast shutter speed equals sharp photos.

This experience today has inspired me; Photography is much more than a fancy Camera with supersonic bells and whistles. It’s about something far more important.

Photography is understanding the magic of Light and how this elusive component can be harnessed and contained for a specific length of time on a very sensitive media, be it film or digital sensor.

The Camera, that is home to this sensitive media can be as basic and simple as you like or a super sophisticated computer.

At the end of the day, it is just magic box that does one thing really well, allow Light in through its little hole through a simple metal tube called…….a lens.

It’s amazing to me how this simple concept is so dam expensive.

My Canon EOS 500 is as basic as they come. Yet, it delivers a magical expression of life in 35mm.

My Photography will now feature shooting in 35mm Film along side my digital work.

A photograph held in the palm of my hand connects me to my life. My friends, my family, my ex-girlfriends, women I have loved. It reminds me of who I was and makes me feel proud of who I have become.

Photography to me is about creating magical memories, telling stories in a single frame, one moment in time.

If my images can put a smile on your face, bring a tear to your eye, make your heart skip a beat, it only means one very important thing……..YOU ARE ALIVE.

Life, the ultimate adventure….

Is…

To…

Be…

Lived……and in my case, created one frame at a time.

All of these images were scanned from film negatives and shared as is.

The great paradox in all of this, is that I am sharing images of photographs I held in my hand today, you are experiencing these images on a screen.📸🤔💻📸
