Canalway Cavalcade 2023

Little Venice is a gorgeous place to live. It is photogenic anytime of year. I am great full to my friend Paul Atherton for reminding me about The Canalway Cavalcade.

The Mayday Bank Holiday Weekend transforms Little Venice into a spectacle of colour, personality and character. The people who make their home on The Grand Union Canal make a pilgrimage to Little Venice and Moored Boats completely decorate the Canal environment.

The one thing that makes this all work is the character and personality of the people who choose this way of life. It certainly has a hedonistic energy about it.

I am always seeking out interesting subjects and stories for my photojournalism. The yearly Canalway Cavalcade is a wonderful story to document; I enjoyed meeting and talking to the people, learning about their lifestyle and just simply appreciating the variety of human expression.

I was happy seeing Paul and a group of friends for the final light show of boats on the canal.

The final jewel in the crown was seeing my friend John Styles present his Punch & Judy Show.

I was thrilled and delighted to see John Styles presenting his Punch and Judy show for the children; he drew a huge crowed. The families were delighted.

John has been doing this act since 1952. At age 89, I was astounded by his forceful energy and delivery. These images give a sense of what it was like being their. I thought this would be a nice acknowledgement to John our esteemed member.

John Styles is a master of entertainment and authority on The Punch and Judy.

That’s the way to do it John.

That’s it for another year.

Thanks for reading.
