On Going Study | Back to 50

After Carnival weekend, I have decided to just roll with life, take it easy and just create images with the utmost simplicity.

This is my set-up; the magnificent D700 paired with the equally stunning 50mm 1.4G

I am using this set-up because I am consolidating my compositional skills, framing, working my subject and really testing my skills against the tight frame the 50mm provides.

This Lens really makes me work for my Frame.

When I saw the Bicycle above, I wanted maximum depth of focus because it was the only one on the stand. I wanted to feature the whole Bike stand and the loneliness of the single Bike. The 35mm would have framed this with great ease. I noticed how much I had to position myself to creat this Frame.

This Lens is fantastic.

Although it is not my natural Frame, I consider it an important tool in my bag when using the D700.

The tighter Frame is perfect for singular theme subjects like my Breakfast.

Or my late supper.

I really appreciate the simplicity of this combination. Don’t confuse simple with easy to execute. This Lens needs room to navigate, unlike the 35mm, getting close is easier than taking a few steps back.

I can’t take anything for granted with the 50mm. It demands total dedication and commitment to the Frame. Only then will she reveal her magic.

“I think the 50mm lens is an extremely good discipline lens; it requires you to see in a more refined way, not just tighter”.
