Time of Day

This morning the Light was gorgeous.

The clouds in the sky were wispy thin and the colour blue was beautiful.

I created these two images one after the other about 200 metres apart on the same side of the road.

The quality and direction of Light was so enchanting, glowing, warm and definitely inviting.

I was thinking about this on the way to the coffee shop. It occurred to me how interesting the quality, direction, intensity and presence of the Light at different times of the day can completely alter the same subject.

This to me is really interesting.

It’s the same subject and yet, the image was created at a different time today - during the blue hour.

I did not use a tripod for this image.

So technically, this is a lowlight image with a high ISO and reasonably fast Shutter Speed of 1/125th sec.

Here is the same subject of the school just further up on the left. Yet, it is a different image with a different feeling and texture - all because of the Light and time of day.

This experiment was just to consolidate my own learning and understanding. I thought the Light was very magical this morning and it left me inspired to create complimentary images later in the day - just to document my thoughts and feelings about the Light and how it behaves.

This behaviour of the Light has been a fascinating study for me because, let’s face it, without the Light where would we be as image creators?

The Light is like a beautiful woman: feminine, flirtatious, vivacious, cool, unpredictable, seductive and mysterious. Our job is to learn to navigate all these different moods.

Life is too short to ever think we will master this. The best we can hope for is to cultivate the willingness and the ongoing desire to be taken wherever the Light leads us.

Thanks for reading.
