100F | 50 Shades of Grey

In the last 24 hours, creating Black & White images has taught me a lot.

Its not Black & White.

Its different shades of grey - with strong Blacks at one end of the spectrum and bright Whites at the other.

It’s the 50 shades of grey in between that reveals the complexity of the tonal range.

This academic exercise supports me in appreciating why I love colour photography more……a whole lot more.

I don’t “see” in shades of grey.

I see the full range of colour that life has to offer. What mutes my colour or makes it sharp and vivid is the quality of Light.

Shooting in Black & White allows me to see the Light with no distraction.

I cant miss it.

Once I see it, I can set my exposure to ensure details in the brightest part of the image. The Raw File will retain good detail in the shadows should I wish recover post processing.

There is only one light source, the Sun; just like the film 50 Shades of Grey, what is present is a complex personality which needs to be wrestled with to get to the source of the authentic character.

Black & White Photography is no different.

Thanks for reading. 😃
