2020 Vision | The Expression Of Light

I am studying Light, Colour & Gesture by Jay Maisel at the moment. It’s a wonderful study about everything else regarding creating an image. There is no mention of Camera Gear or anything technical. This book is all about being open, receptive and responsive to Light.

As I read this book, my heart skipped a beat.

Having a great subject is what Photography is all about.

However, without Light, what will we paint with.

I have started paying attention to where the Light is falling.

In the past, I took for granted it’s daylight so creating an image will be a straight forward exposure. Making the Light, it’s direction and quality, my primary focus means colour and gesture/expression stand a good chance of being illuminated and fully expressive.

One tip Jay Maisel mentions is to pay attention to where the Light is falling.

This tip has given my seeing a new lease of energy.

It’s obvious and yet, I was blinded by the obvious nature of daylight being everywhere.

Now, I can really tune into the expression of Light and feel its magic.

That magic is real.

The images created in this post were take a few hours ago. The weather and sunshine is lovely in London right now.

Classic High Noon.

Now, get this, that’s not what I am paying attention to, I am seeing deep shadows with strong lines. I am seeing the Light in front of me, creating an image shooting into the Light creates silhouettes.

This is so cool.

Recognisable shapes turned black while the Light sculpts around the subject.

I am feeling a shift in my receptivity.

I will be practicing this - even in the house.

Pockets of Light everywhere.
