50mm | Refined Vision

“I think the 50mm lens is an extremely good discipline lens; it requires you to see in a more refined way, not just tighter.” Albert Allard

This qoute has really captured my attention.

I love the syntax and use of language to communicate an ideal and philosophy.

I have been thinking about what it could mean. The use of the word discipline is quite telling. This tells me to use this Lens for a period of time. Stick with it, use everyday, create different types of images, incorporate the vision and field of view into my visual database of knowledge.

The discipline of using a 50mm Lens so far has taught me how to work a scene, move my body, look for the creative angle, create my composition. There is only so much that can fit into this unique Frame.

This field of view only has enough room for the primary subject. Some additional elements may be allowed but not always, just enough to flesh out the Frame.

I believe this refinement of vision is all about creating a Frame that is clean. A Frame that draws attention to the primary subject without any distractions. This is not easy; I have noticed I am scanning my edges before hitting the shutter. The 50mm Lens is a very contemplative tool to use; I don’t want to rush the process; street photography can be quite a dynamic operation. Using this Lens would require a skillfull deft handling and execution.

The qoute by Albert Allard draws reference to the tighter Frame, the refinement and discipline comes from using this constraint for authentic and creative expression.

Refinement, Discipline, Patience, Contemplative & Creative Vision; these adjectives come to mind when using the 50mm Lens.

This is a great practice for my studies especially as this is not my normal field of view.

Thanks for reading.
