Creative Exposure | Light Vision
March 3, 2025Over the last few days and journal entries, I have experienced a breakthrough in my understanding of creative exposure. The different metering options confused me in the past. This is why I simply left it on Matrix and forgot about it. Matrix Metering does a great job so I did not need to mess around with it.
I feel differently now about what my camera can do. My understanding of Matrix, Centre Weighted & Spot Metering is much clearer than ever before.
Today, is the most comfortable and fluid I have felt using my Camera. I felt intentional as I observed the direction and quality of the Light. I was intentionally looking for where the light was falling and setting my exposure for that specific part of the scene.
These images are my practice for today.
I am very happy with them.
Today was very nice, the Light was warm, the sky was rich Blue so my metering was set to Matrix and my exposure reading was set to 2/3 under exposed.
I switched to Centre Weighted to put accurate exposure emphasis on a single theme subjects.
I interpret Centre Weighted Metering as an accurate choice to ensure a precise exposure on my subject.
This breakthrough in understanding my Metering options has given me greater confidence in creating my images. It now makes complete sense.
The camera cannot think for me, so why should I let it work on auto, this includes the Aperture/Shutter Priority options. No, I want full control over my camera at all times.
Today, I set my Shutter speed to 1/250, I set my Aperture for my intended subject and how much depth of field I required, and then looking through the view finder, set my ISO while watching the meter needle move into position either at 0 or - 2/3 stop. This gave me good results.
Admittedly, if I make use of Auto ISO, I would give myself a fast minimum shutter speed when working needing to work faster for street photography. In this case I would give myself F8 on my 35mm with a zone focus of 5 meters and trust my choice of metering options to deliver a well exposed image.
Light vision is my anchor for seeing, feeling and responding to the Light.
It's a very magical process.
