Playing With Light

Light governs everything in image creation.

It’s a relationship like no other.

From one day to the next, the Light dictates the flow of our relationship.

It would be easy to say, I have no say in this relationship - however, yes, the Light dictates, all the Light is saying to me is, how can you make use of me today, right now in this moment?

Making use of the Light in a specific moment in time, with a specific subject is all there is.

My only mission and purpose in that specific moment is to use the Light exactly as it is and create an image.

Nothing more.

Nothing less.

Same subject - only a few feet apart and yet, the Light falling on the subject was totally different.

My camera told me so.

The meter in my Camera read the Light and I did whatever adjustments needed to create an exposure.

This is no different than performing the same card magic routine for ten different audiences. It’s the same routine but each performance is a totally different experience.

My Photography is becoming a lot simpler.

I am becoming a human light meter.

Seeing, feeling and reading the Light.

I now understand what Henri Cartier Bresson meant when he said my first 10,000 images will be my worst. He preceded Malcolm Gladwell by several decades 10,000 hours of practice to achieve mastery.

Nonsense - it can take that long just to understand what I am doing but it has take far longer to find peace, balance and harmony with an element of photography I have no control over.

The Light governs everything
