Spotting The Light
March 1, 2025Creating images at night has become a lot more interesting.
Spotting the Light is my game and play on words because I have better understanding of what is going on in my camera regarding the Metering process.
During the day light hours, I can choose between Matrix Metering or Centre Weighted - I leaning towards Matrix when using a 35mm Lens because that moderate Wide Angle takes in a wider field of view. Matrix Metering takes in the whole scene and analyses the light levels for optimum exposure.
Centre Weighted Metering is excellent for singular themed subject and Portraits. I am confident this will give me greater control of my creative exposure.
Spot Metering is very a powerful metering option when working in low light.
When creating images at night, the only light available is street light, lights from homes so this is likely to be the brightest part of a given scene. This becomes my area of focus and option for creating a well lit image. It occurred to I could borrow the exposure setting from the brightest part of a scene, Lock in my exposur metering, recompose and hit the shutter.
Voila!!!!
Learning more about my metering options has been a big breakthrough in expanding my creative exposure options.
The images speak for themselves.
Creative exposure is about seeing the Light, its direction, quality and exposing for it with creative intent.
Light is the begins and the end.
Let there be Light.
